John Lindsay's autopen helped get me into MIT. I commuted from Staten Island to Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, an hour and a half each way, and thus had no time for student activities outside of class. But my MIT application form had a section to be filled out by my activities advisor (they wanted no mere tools there; we had to be well-rounded.) Lindsay to the rescue! I had done some minor envelope stuffing for his 1965 NYC mayoral campaign, so I got an effusive thank-you form letter for my efforts, signed by his autopen. I stapled the letter to the advisor form and the deed was done..
In 1771 Thomas Jefferson, in a letter to Robert Skipwith, recommended a list of books that would form a good education. It included Adam Smith's "A Theory of Moral Sentiments," first published in 1759. This relatively forgotten work was Smith's masterpiece, updated four times before Smith's death in 1790. Jefferson's letter was five years before he penned the Declaration, and Smith published his sequel, "The Wealth of Nations" in 1776. Adam Smith was one of those original foundations, sturdy to this day.
Frankly Dr. Hayward, the older I get, the more I wish reading old books made up what amounts to practically the whole of my college education. Interesting post, thank you
Why, these days, does it seem like every “public policy” essentially boils down to a money laundering scheme to squeeze wealth from the middle class and redistribute it to the very poor and very rich? I guess its for the children?🤷🏼♂️
The last Administration typified Politics as a Vacation.
Only the figurehead President slept on the beach, the autopen was quite busy.
