While it is true that McDonalds pulled out long ago there are still several "American" fast food outlets, can't call them restaurants, around. I lived in Iceland for 3 years and grew to love the country. Find the out of the way restaurants and eat there. The food is delicious. Oh, one more thing, you should know that Icelandic whole milk is about 3.5% butterfat. It is supremely delicious and will add pounds very quickly. Just ask me. LOL
When I was looking into graduate schools in 1971, one on my short-list was Washington University in St Louis, all on the strength of a couple of Michael Ledeen's articles (and his doctoral dissertation) on Italian Fascism. As it happened, McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario offered me a very lucrative scholarship which allowed me to pay off my undergraduate student loan and complete my Ph.D. degree debt-free. Their Italian history specialist, however, turned out to be uninspiring, and I dropped the focus on Italian history in favour of historiography and Victorian Britain. I continued, however, to follow Ledeen's work on Italy, and later, on his other studies. He has been relentlessly maligned by the Left, but his historical work was excellent.
I just have to relay that i havent read anything by Mr. Ledeen in a long time but in the early 2000’s he wrote something that i cant recall, maybe in national review or the new republic but it was so notable to me, that i emailed him about it and he actually was kind enough to respond. But we never followed up. Seemed to me a very kind and thoughtful man.
If you're in Akureyri, go to DJ Grill--best burger in Iceland and better than the golden arches.
I went! Burgers were terrific, as promised, and the fries very hot (which is my preference).
Thanks for the tip!

When I was a child, my dad had cancer. Mom ordered 4.5% butterfat milk delivered from a local dairy to try and keep dad's weight up. Heavenly!
Lake Myvatn may have mosquitoes.
My means mosquitoe in Icelandic. Or maybe gnats.
No mosquitoes, but you are right about the gnats. Hard crusted annoying little buggers.
