Thank you, Dr Hayward, for mentioning the great John Lukacs. His book, "The Last European War" is a riveting study of the early WWII years, (1939-1941) that were so very critical.

Please share your thoughts on Norman Davies. I have found his books on Poland (Rising '44, White Eagle Red Star, God's Playground) very good. Poland is a country that has been a flashpoint in European geopolitics going back to the partition in 1797 up to the events in 1990 yet so very few Americans have any knowledge of it.

I would also mention Alastair Horne. His books on French history I have found to be outstanding. His book on the French-Algerian War, "A Savage War of Peace", is by far the best book I have read on that topic.
