Greenland is a great first step to re-establishing Old Glory's dominion over more of North America. With the mess that Justin Trudeau has made of Canada, and the long overdue liberation of Cuba from Communism, I would love to see us continue what Thomas Jefferson and James K. Polk started in the nineteenth century. I'm not completely joking.
Greenland is home to over-the-horizon radar stations that give us the earliest possible alert of Soviet (oops, Russian) ICBM launches towards at lest the East Coast, maybe more of CONUS. It's as strategic a location as the Panama Canal, and held by a government increasingly hostile to us.
60,000 people? give them each $1 million and a home in Florida.. and you get a 99% pro-vote on becoming a US protectorate... for much less even in nominal terms than Truman offered Denmark for it ..
Steve, the next place that will become a flash point among the major powers on the planet will be the arctic circle. New technology, and relatively recent surveys, have discovered the potential for harvesting massive natural resources, especially oil deposits. Russia and China are intensely pursuing ventures in the north.
Being able to control the seas out to the limit generally recognized could also assist us in protecting all the northern seas around our continent, especially the fisheries, which are in danger of being over used.
Greenland would give the US a couple of important advantages. It would extend our military and intelligence presence in along the frozen arctic ocean far to the east of where it is now. Of course, what we do with that advantage would be the devil in the details. But, in addition to natural resources, Greenland provides a beneficial geo political position that would be incredibly advantageous.
The 60K Greenlanders cannot possibly protect the entire island, and -- even though they would be "independent" -- they really can't exist in the modern society w/o important assistance from other countries. Their independence might actually help our potential enemies establish positions that would make it more dangerous for us.
Besides, if Al Gore is right, Southern Greenland will be the Caribbean of the late 21st Century! I'm investing in South Greenland Marina Condos as soon as they come on the market. Time shares?
Greenlanders should want to be Americans. If something goes haywire there, it’s gonna be Americans rescuing them anyway. Land of the free, home of the brave! And let’s just take Cuba while we’re at it. It can’t be that hard!
Why did we want Alaska?
It was known as "Sewards Folly". Like the Louisiana purchase, rising nations tend to expand!
And the U.S. is still rising.

We are the empire of liberty, after all.

Easy peasy! It would be a steal!
