My ancestor, Mary Towne Estey, was one of those women hung as a witch in Salem. She was posthumously exonerated. There are real victims of these witch hunts. It's unfortunate that such a former bright star like Candace Owens is turning into a lunatic.
Well, that's just terrible! My Daddy CLAIMED that somebody in our family had done some research that showed an ancestor WAY back who had been hanged as a horse thief. And, like Fauxcohantas, there was a rumor of an ancestor who had married an Indian woman, but that was never confirmed either. Where do I go to get my Harvard professorship and lifetime sinecure as a Senator? Heck, I've even lost 2 or 3 lbs with worry over my brother's health (he's fine, as you will learn tomorrow, Praise God!), so any minute now I may develop high cheekbones! AG
Owens started with great capital as she is a black female non-liberal, articulate, and attractive as well. Regrettably she now proves that there is indeed a far-right lunatic fringe, to match anything the left has to offer.
Well as Rebecca and Mary were sisters, you and I are distant cousins. My wife is also descended from Rebecca Towne Nurse as well (so yes I married my 13th cousin). It does give me a different take on all the Salem Witch Trial stuff.
Nathaniel Hawthorne also had his own take. His ancestor Hathorne was a judge in those trials. Hawthorne changed the spelling of his name to disassociate himself from that ancestor.
My conspiracy theory is that satan stalks the world looking to corrupt as many souls as possible and destroy the institutions that should protect us from him.
The pandemic taught me that people are really easy to manipulate when they're terrified. Monetizing fear, as T&C are doing, is the cheapest, laziest way to power, fame and fortune in this broken world.
Since there were 0 protests when the Obama administration deported 12,000,000 foreign nationals, using the same tactics and personnel, my hot take on the January riots of Mpls is that ICE is simply a convenient excuse for the left to try to give the current administration a black eye. Keeping rapists, murderers (and pedophiles!)on our streets is just the cherry on top.
"My conspiracy theory is that satan stalks the world looking to corrupt as many souls as possible and destroy the institutions that should protect us from him."
This is true. Thing is in waaaay too many instances we do most of the work ourselves!
I remember the Kathleen Morris child molestation prosecutions well. They were absurd on their face, but just rolled along, destroying the lives of anyone in their path. They, and others like them across the country, really opened my eyes to the extent to which human beings can embrace the irrationality that lurks within each of us. It just takes something that can make them feel like they are in the vanguard of righteous anger, and someone they can hate without reservation. It's part of the human condition that unbridled hatred, unburdened by the limits of rationality, can be intoxicating. We saw it again during the Covid episode, and we see it today in the resurgence of antisemitism, the ICE riots, and the reflexive enmity to anything Donald Trump says or does.
So beautifully stated, so tragically true. At a corporate gig not long after that disgrace, I was seated next to a very nice man who seemed to me to be a broken man. I am blessed/cursed with a face that must say -- whether banquet, grocery line, or airplane ride -- "tell me your troubles and don't leave out a thing". This poor man opened up that his daughter had been "cutting" herself and doing other self-destructive things. The parents sent her to a radical lesbian "therapist" who immediately determined that she had been molested as a child. The girl denied it until the therapist talked her into it. Nightmares ensued, legally and personally. The man said he had examined his parenting and his conscience and could not think of a single incident that might even raise questions.
Imagine the fun trying to do standup comedy after listening to such a tale...
Max, one other common trait of conspiracy mongers is their lack of humor and joy in their lives. Your lovely spouse, Susan, has brought not only truth to thousands, especially me, but lots of humor as well. I think Carlson and Owens are dangerous, but they're also stupidly funny. Keep up the good work.
I saw a comment that blamed OSHA, because before it, stupid people got eliminated a lot more often. I feel like if someone wants to eat the carton, that is a basic stupid person's right.
One summer in college, my summer job had me climbing up and down an 8' ladder. The company bought a new one with OSHA approved safety stuff. The top two steps on each side had, instead of a high traction finish, shiny stickers covered by slick gloss finish warning you that you might slip if you used them. I think they made it slick to ensure you would slip.
It is sad to observe Candace & Tucker promote their vile ideas & b/c there are enough empty vessels (millions of them) who wish to believe them & their lies. My hunch is b/c this poison in their minds makes them feel superior in a perverted way. People want to believe these lies & just they want to protest. The political cause is just a convenient excuse. Btw-the Jordan child molestation case preceded the most famous one - mcmartin case in manhattan beach. 7 years of court, unjust imprisonment & the original accuser was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. The mcmartin family was destroyed due to witch-hunt. People choose to believe the evil ghosts in their minds , and we all suffer for it.
I well remember the McMartin case. It was a modern-day witch hunt and ended with many utterly innocent people accused of truly UNbelieveable acts against children at a daycare facility. You are correct, people *want* to believe such things because it makes them feel morally superior. It was horrifying.
We are surrounded by the same "madness of crowds" in people who hate our President, who believe their childrens' insistence that they were "born in the wrong body", that Alex Pretti was a mildmannered loving guy who never hurt anyone, and that we can turn our climate into the Garden of Eden by undoing the industrial revolution.
[Not-so-fun fact: lefties have two outlets to hate ICE, which stands for :
Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Internal Combustion Engines. Both are in common use.]
The other witch hunt that I remember was the Duke University Men's LaCrosse rape accusation in 2006. The members made stupid choices but they were not rapists. The only redeeming thing is that bad things happened to their persecutors, principally Mike Nifong. Another good thing is that many of these young men turned their thinking around and at least one went on to do excellent work on the Innocence Project.
The witch hunt is also the go-to first call tactic leftists employ to maintain their control over universities and other cultural heights. Any conservative or indeed any independent thinker can turn into a witch to be hunted the first time he or she says anything the hard left objects to. This is true even within leftist organizations themselves.
As far as I can tell it's especially true within the leftist organizations. It just doesn't usually make headlines. They don't tolerate any heresy. It's often hard, however, to keep up with the current opinion and maintain one's virtue rating.
One reason The Current Thing keeps changing is that the process helps the leaders maintain their power. Shape-shifting terminology and theory is their key to control over their subservient followers and especially followers not sufficiently subservient.
Yes, indeed. The Faculty morons not only did not believe in stoopid things like evidence and "innocent until proven guilty", even the guys who had date and time-stamped receipts to prove they weren't THERE, but they offered a scholarship to the prevaricating prostitute. Sadly, she could not take them up on it, since not too long after she was jailed for killing her pimp. Sad. AG
As just an academic exercise, if the allegation is true, I wonder how drunk Web Hubbell had to be in order to accomplish the feat in question. Conservatively, I estimate that it would have to be in 3.0+ range, which is barely functioning physically, while rapidly approaching a comatose state.
Then there's the question of the immediate aftermath. I would expect a Coyote Ugly scenario. So, did Web still have the use of both arms? And, there's also the obvious human black widow issues.
Bill leaves a wide wake filled with bimbos, some of whom publicly complain. No one has ever identified a man, including Bill, who was willing to spend "quality time" with Hillary.
Of course, there's Vince Foster.
If you sleep with dogs, you run the risk of waking up with flees. If you get on the wrong side of HRC and then sleep with her, you may not wake up, especially if you possess incriminating information about her conduct.
This is off topic, but I know of interest to many of our friends here. I gave a presentation at CC2 that included a discussion of the harm being done by American medical institutions by their adoption of both DEI and (here's a new term I like) sex-denying interventions. I just had the pleasure of participating in a private webinar by an organization, Do No Harm, founded by Dr. Stanley Goldfarb. DNH has grown, now has 50,000 members, and as I just learned played a major role in collaboration with the Trump 2.0 administration on development of administrative actions that have reversed support at the federal level for DEI and sex-denying medical interventions. Scott Centorino went from DNH to a presidential assistant at the White House who was responsible for drafting and implementing many of the executive orders that have now resulted in major setbacks for the Left in this "culture war" area. He described in the webinar how strongly President Trump, Steven Miller, Suzie Wiles, etc. supported these efforts. So it was great to hear those behind-the-scenes descriptions of how strongly the DJT administration has been from before day 1 of Trump 2.0 in these important areas. Now in the news we read of a landmark lawsuit success; followed by statements from the plastic surgeons' group and (more vaguely) the AMA. There has been a reversal on the field. Now we must have a GOP congress in January to be sure it is all codified.
It is not off topic. What is happening is that yet another witch hunt, this one against those deny "transgender" ideology, is failing in the face or reality. And of course, any Democrat Congress will do what the Minnesota and other Democrat state legislatures have done and enforce the evil.
Max seems spot on here—I particularly like the target showing the layers between theories, conspiracies and practitioners (?). What troubles me is: why? Why do commentators such as Tucker and Candace believe as they do? (Thanks, Max, for mentioning the “Brigette Macron is secretly a man” slander. A similar conspiracy theory has been going around about Michelle Obama.) Many people assume that those with whom they disagree are either stupid, mentally ill or downright evil. I would disregard the idea that Tucker and Candace are stupid as you don’t achieve their degree of career success being a dummy. (Similarly, I know lots of really smart people that disagree with me politically on pretty much everything.) If they are mentally ill, they deserve treatment and our pity. Now being evil is another matter. Using Tucker as an example, remember his pivotal interview with DJT before the 2024 election that had 100 million plus views? Was Tucker hiding his true feelings hoping to use Trump later to advance his nefarious plans? Certainly, deceptive manipulation of the facts is evil. Is this all a cynical strategy to increase ratings or marketing a brand? Or (as mentioned by Timothy Hurlocker today hubris?) ??
I don't know about Candace; I believe (without any evidence of course) that Carlson does not believe the stuff he says, but yes, RAM, he cashes in on it. In any case, it's despicable.
One need never ask Joe to “tell us how you really feel!”. His opinions are blunt, direct, but most importantly backed by well researched credible evidence. This is a stark contrast to the conspiracy monger that will be releasing names and “facts” …. in the near future.

I recommend that Substack implement a choice for multiple likes, in the tradition of "megadittos," because a single like is not nearly enough for this post.
“ the jibber-jabber of crafty nutjobs” — I love that phrasing! Max, you render their thoughts inconsequential (who can take jibber-jabber seriously?), attribute intent to it (crafty), and label it meaningless (because who can take a nutjob seriously?).
I used to take both Tucker Carlson and Candace Owen seriously. They seemed to have unique takes on the events of the world. I even considered subscribing to TCN. Until I saw that he was apparently an anti-Jew and didn’t see the harm in Putin. That raised my eyebrows and I stopped paying attention to them.
"The audience will tune in again for those promised future revelations sure to come."
This is an effective tactic used not only by conspiracy peddlers and nut jobs like Owen, it also works to keep people buying conspiracy books and coming back to the History Channel to see if they've captured a Sasquatch or an alien. Doesn't matter how crazy the idea is or how little actual evidence there is. To paraphrase Fox Mulder, people want to believe.
Feeling a little paranoid about harboring two black cats? Wait until Halloween rolls around! The best plan would be to separate them at night starting in mid-September to prevent midnight rituals and summoning of evil spirits. Of course, they have no way of knowing that some of the evilest entities are located in Washington. The cats' spirit summoning devices would probably have to go into "roaming" to access any available malevolence from D.C. democrats, but luckily for them, there are vast resources of evil right in your Governor's mansion and the Capitol grounds. Stock up on Reynold's Wrap and be sure to anchor their little hats securely over the ears.
Just to be safe, don't play any Candace Owens videos within earshot of Cocoa Puff and Tyrus. Having a cat family of conspiracy theorists can be exhausting. Don't' ask me how I know.
You are connecting the dots like a true Maxigator. After all, their obvious Israeli connection is also a "manifestation" of their witch natures. I wonder if I should have a dream in which they come and claw me. I could get a few more views from that.
Max you go on about Maxigators, but never mention the more sinister Mexigators now confined at Alligator Alcatraz. Now, as far as I can tell there is no more sinister and monster filled piece of American dirt than Alligator Alcatraz.
All of the above. When Obi Wan says about Mos Eisly, "...not find a more wretched...", he doesn't deny the existence of equally wretched hives of "scum and villainy."
Well, I suppose the lions didn't have access to a tiny tv with cable access plus the plush cat tree. However, if your kids have access to MTV and CNN, their aggression levels could equal that of Daniel's companions.
The cats aren't sinisterly skulking. They are innocently *prowsing*, a word coined by our Number One Son Andy, when he was maybe 5 years old.
Cats have had a bad enough reputation (as witches' familiars, among other mysterious activities; even dead cats—cf. Tom Sawyer). As with Jews, we must resist conspiring to impugn our felines.
And they are a TEAM, Lynn! I call them The Wrecking Crew and delight to awake each morning to see what they have accomplished overnight! HAS to be Mossad...we don't have any pagers, but are keeping a close watch on our cellphones! AG
You've forgotten what it's like to have toddlers in the house! We have two one-year-old cats now, and when they're not prowsing in dark corners, they like to chase each other all through the halls and open rooms, at any hour of the night. If it ain't nailed down, it's fair game.
Oh, girl, you are too quick for me. I was JUST going to make that pun, and there it is! Boy, would I have looked stupid. Note to self: ALWAYS read down-range before weighing in. AG
I enjoy these extended 'crap on Tucker' columns immensely. Candace is a bit different for me, and I'd like to explain.
While both of these characters are quite wrong in their viewpoints, Tucker is the antisemitic ideologue and I think, the more dangerous of the two. Tucker, like Gavin Newsom, hides his actual intentions when directly challenged, dancing on language definition and deflection. Tucker wants to be taken seriously, as he works to promote a jew-hating perspective.
Candace, IMO, is acting a fool. She's creating clickbait, and the more preposterous the content, the less serious she becomes. While her expressed views can encourage dangerous behavior, she doesn't hide from them when challenged.
Dana Loesch has been great on both these clowns. I prefer that more would join this bandwagon.
Dave Rubin and others are promoting notions very similar to those of Dana Loesch. Victor Davis Hansen and Dinesh D'Souza also. In fact, there are quite a few. It's refreshing to see.
But so far Ben Shapiro has been the most direct in attacking them, as you pointed out very well, Max. Ben seems to be very solid. Like our Rush Limbaugh of old, you can count on him for the right take on some new thing.
JD seems afraid he'll lose the antisemite vote from people like Carlson. Just recently, he issued a statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day without mentioning the dreaded "Jew" word. He is another one helping to de-Jew the Holocaust. Politicians craft their language with great care, and he is torpedoing his own future.
I am very worried that JD may be the next Republican candidate for president. I just don't think I can vote for the lesser of two evils anymore. Like the Fugs sang "why does it always seem like we end up voting for the lesser of two evils in this country?"
I read Hillbilly Elegy, of course, and was very moved. I love the Vance family with the little ones and another on the way. He is a superb debater and contributed mightily in knocking Walz around. Unlike Joe, I am not ready to write him off yet. I am very fond of both Rubio and De Santis, and even Ted Cruz, although people tell me that he is not a warm and cuddly personality. Trump has -- God willing -- 3 more long years. Either J.D. will learn on the job or he will not be up to the job.
I have not written Vance off. I merely observe he is making mistakes which show he is not ready to be POTUS. As of now, I still prefer Rubio. Things may change.
How much funding is he getting from somewhere? How many bot followers? I do notice that whenever he shouts hysteria over some Trump decision, 90% of Republicans support Trump.
That's prime father/daughter dance material right there. Do you suppose Webb makes annual "contributions" to the Clinton Foundation?
I heard, maybe it was a joke, that President Trump wanted to add a word and make it "National Immigration and Customs Enforcement".
Yes - because then the left wing media would have to refer continually to "NICE agents on our streets." They'd have to keep saying it. Heh heh.

It’s probably just something he carried over from his youthful socialist days, when he used to sing:
If I had a hammer,
I’d hammer in the morning
I’d hammer in the evening
…
Of course those who listen to the 3WHH sing the revised lyrics
If I got hammered,
I’d get hammered in the morning
I’d get hammered in the evening
…
You never disappoint! AG
I thought that was the Paul Pelosi love song, ideally performed in boxer shorts.
Brilliant!
Damn near snorted my whiskey out with that one 🤣!
Okay, NOW you made me laugh loudly enough to drive Cocoa Puff off her "Princess Pillow" by my computer.

I recommend that Substack implement a choice for multiple likes, in the tradition of "megadittos," because a single like is not nearly enough for this post.
Thanks--maybe our host can pass on your idea!
(Which gives me a chance to point out that those who agree with you can "Restack" as a means of spreading the word.)
Good essay, once again.
Tracy,
You are connecting the dots like a true Maxigator.
"... no more sinister and monster filled piece of American dirt"
I thought it was “wretched hive of scum and villainy”
That's DC. Or Minneapolis. Or Chicago. I can't keep up.
All of the above. When Obi Wan says about Mos Eisly, "...not find a more wretched...", he doesn't deny the existence of equally wretched hives of "scum and villainy."
A modern-day Daniel equal to the Lions' den?
A domestic cat den would not be as impressive as a lion's den.
It could be Mousead, a little-known offshoot of Mossad.
Oh, girl, you are too quick for me. I was JUST going to make that pun, and there it is! Boy, would I have looked stupid. Note to self: ALWAYS read down-range before weighing in. AG
My fondest wish would be that our brains have the same factory settings.
The other day Trump (without naming names) came out against them. I'm Still waiting for *JD Vance to come out and speak About The New Right.
*JD has a TC problem.
AG
I have not written Vance off. I merely observe he is making mistakes which show he is not ready to be POTUS. As of now, I still prefer Rubio. Things may change.
'Just recently, he issued a statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day without mentioning the dreaded "Jew" word.'
Josh Shapiro criticized JD for this, and it turns out that he himself had done the same thing two years in a row. Awkward!
I would not go That far at this stage of the race....BUT (know what I'm saying?). JD IMO is a very good sharp politician.
I also Do Wonder just how much support Tucker has.
How much funding is he getting from somewhere? How many bot followers? I do notice that whenever he shouts hysteria over some Trump decision, 90% of Republicans support Trump.
THAT is my point. Also a couple of weeks ago it was found much of Tucker's support is Bot Farms.

Agree, Tucker is much better at this, having been In The Game for many many years.
