The Chinese justice system appears to comprise a courtroom with an attached courtyard into which the convicted are led immediately after sentencing. This might be going a little too far the other way.
The object of a life sentence is to remove the offender from society, permanently. Capital punishment is a little more permanent. Commuting and pardoning simply pervert the system.
